The drive to the coast is very scenic and the best drive day on the tour. You can spend hours taking in the scenery as it changes from bush, to scrub, to rolling hills with sparse vegetation and then to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Namibian-Seal-Colony-Rd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-405\" title=\"Namibian Seal Colony Rd\" src=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Namibian-Seal-Colony-Rd-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Namibian-Seal-Colony-Rd-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Namibian-Seal-Colony-Rd-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Namibian-Seal-Colony-Rd.jpg 1379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>the flat desert land that makes up the Skeleton coast.<\/p>\n<p>The name &#8220;Skeleton Coast&#8221; is derived from\u00a0the fact that\u00a0many whales and ships\u00a0have been\u00a0washed ashore here\u00a0by\u00a0harsh\u00a0conditions in the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0\u00a0 After a\u00a0while driving along this coast, \u00a0it all begins to look the same, \u00a0and as the name suggests the Skeleton Coast becomes Dead Boring!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Seal-Colony.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-406\" title=\"Seal Colony\" src=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Seal-Colony-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Seal-Colony-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Seal-Colony-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Seal-Colony.jpg 1379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>We make a sharp left turn on the salt road and head for the waves that we can see in the distance and before long\u00a0find ourselves surrounded by 40 thousand Cape Fur Seals.\u00a0 There is nothing out here besides the\u00a0waves of the Atlantic, salt flats,\u00a0 rocks and the smelly seals.\u00a0\u00a0 This colony always resides at this spot along the coast and it is a guarantee that you will see seals.\u00a0 At this time of the year they\u00a0have just given birth to pups and the shore is full of seal cows (as the females are known)\u00a0and their pups.\u00a0 Some pups are only weeks old and we get a chorus of seal bleating from mothers trying to find their pups and pups trying to find their mothers. However impressive watching all these seals is we are forced to leave as the seals stink and there is only so much bad fish breath that one can take!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Tip of the Day:<\/em><\/strong> There is nothing better than taking a deep breath of\u00a0the\u00a0fresh sea air at Cape Cross.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We leave the Cheetah Park to make our way to Namibia&#8217;s Skeleton Coast.
