{"id":1421,"date":"2014-07-30T14:31:21","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T14:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/?p=1421"},"modified":"2014-07-30T14:55:04","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T14:55:04","slug":"face-africa-joe-angelo-sparky-days-11-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/2014\/07\/face-africa-joe-angelo-sparky-days-11-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Face of Africa with Joe &#038; Angelo on Sparky &#8211; Days 11-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Face of Africa with Joe &amp; Angelo on Sparky &#8211; Days 11-14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Time \u00a0to leave Uganda and head to Kenya, another new country in East Africa, but after the\u00a0\u00a0sun set cruise (or \u00a0booze cruise)\u00a0\u00a0yesterday this morning things are a little bit slow.<\/p>\n<p>We only have 138 km to Malaba border and 188km to Naiberi Overland camp so not too bad because all the group have visas into Kenya already.\u00a0Kenya is a magical country with a history which reaches as far back as man himself, known as the Cradle of Mankind, this part of Africa has been a melting pot of human society since our early ancestor homo\u00a0erectus first walked upright on the shores of lake Turkana 3,500,000 million\u00a0years ago and real history begins with hunters and gatherers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1423\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/birthday.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1423\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1423\" src=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/birthday-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Happy Birthday\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/birthday-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/birthday.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Birthday<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over forty two different ethnic groups live together in\u00a0peace united by the two common languages of\u00a0English and Kiswahili.It is James&#8217; birthday today, he is turning 29 and the plan here is to celebrate in style. First I asked him what he would like to have for dinner and he\u00a0remembered that yummy chicken curry we had a while back at Simba campsite and that is what he wanted to have, so we went shopping in Eldoret town which is one of Kenya\u2019s largest industrial towns, originally called 64 as the nearest town was 64km away. Eldoret is the 5th\u00a0largest\u00a0town in\u00a0Kenya and here we bought some chicken, coconut milk, fresh ginger and other\u00a0\u00a0veges. The first thing we did when\u00a0we arrived at the camp was to decorate our kitchen area, we signed the birthday card and then after dinner it was time for James to blow those candles and make a wish.<\/p>\n<p>HAPPY\u00a0\u00a0BIRTHDAY JAMES!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We arrived at Punda\u00a0Millia\u00a0campsite\u00a0early\u00a0and\u00a0after\u00a0pitching up\u00a0tents,\u00a0the passengers had\u00a0time\u00a0for\u00a0a cold Tusker\u00a0while\u00a0still\u00a0waiting\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0five\u00a0travellers\u00a0to\u00a0arrive\u00a0from Nairobi\u00a0with Kanyo, Patrick\u00a0and\u00a0Pluto.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1424\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tents.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1424\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1424\" src=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tents-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Empty Tents\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tents-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tents.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Empty Tents<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You\u00a0can\u00a0see\u00a0all\u00a0the\u00a0tents\u00a0look\u00a0empty\u00a0and there is no one around.\u00a0It is an early\u00a0morning\u00a0pick up at\u00a06am for\u00a0the\u00a0game\u00a0drives\u00a0in Lake\u00a0Nakuru\u00a0National Park,\u00a0best\u00a0place\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0rhino, flamingos and Rothschild\u00a0giraffes. The\u00a0park is\u00a0140 km north-west\u00a0of Nairobi and covers an area of 188 sq km,\u00a0created in 1961, the\u00a0ecosystem\u00a0comprises\u00a0of the lake, surrounded\u00a0by mainly\u00a0woodland and bushy grasslands. The ecosystem provides\u00a0for about\u00a056 different species of\u00a0mammals\u00a0including the\u00a0White\u00a0Rhino and buffaloes and variety\u00a0of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 250 species. It\u00a0is best known for its thousands, sometimes millions\u00a0of flamingos nesting along the\u00a0shores, but the number varies with water and food conditions and\u00a0the best vantage point is from Baboon cliff.\u00a0In\u00a0\u00a02009\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0of\u00a0black rhinos\u00a0was more\u00a0than 25, one of the largest\u00a0concentrations in the country\u00a0and\u00a0around\u00a070 white rhinos. There\u00a0are\u00a0also lions, leopard, hyenas\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 13<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1425\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/amazi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1425\" class=\"wp-image-1425 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/amazi-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Amazing Grace Children's Home\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/amazi-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.absoluteafrica.com\/liveblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/amazi.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amazing Grace Children&#8217;s Home<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Margret Wanjugu\u00a0Mwangi\u00a0and\u00a0her\u00a0family started\u00a0their\u00a0charity\u00a0work by providing\u00a0a food program for\u00a0children in need in 2008. The food came from\u00a0their\u00a0own granary\u00a0and until they\u00a0had\u00a0no food left,\u00a0even for themselves. As\u00a0a result\u00a0they\u00a0had opened\u00a0a small shop to help them with the small\u00a0food program they started. They\u00a0realised\u00a0that\u00a0those worse\u00a0affected were the children and aimed\u00a0to start\u00a0AMAZING GRACE\u00a0CHILDREN\u00a0HOME.\u00a0Anna\u00a0Wanjiru\u00a0made\u00a0the\u00a0house\u00a0available\u00a0to accommodate the children in need with shelter and a place\u00a0where they can call home. When we\u00a0visited there, the home\u00a0had 25 children, 20 girls\u00a0and 5 boys .The\u00a0Amazing\u00a0Grace Home\u00a0family\u00a0continues to freely\u00a0share\u00a0their\u00a0experiences with\u00a0others\u00a0and will\u00a0create support programs that will\u00a0help\u00a0many more\u00a0disadvantaged children .<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If\u00a0you want\u00a0to feel the\u00a0heart\u00a0of a\u00a0Nation\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0soul, first\u00a0you have\u00a0to get off the\u00a0main street, second\u00a0you mustn&#8217;t\u00a0read the\u00a0gutter\u00a0and gossip press&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0where\u00a0I draw\u00a0some of my\u00a0inspiration!<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0spending\u00a0over\u00a0two\u00a0hours\u00a0donating some food stuff\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0children orphanage and\u00a0everyone\u00a0exhausted after\u00a0playing\u00a0with the kids\u00a0it was\u00a0that\u00a0moment we all hate,\u00a0\u00a0saying\u00a0goodbye,\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0tell\u00a0you\u00a0it was\u00a0not\u00a0easy\u00a0leaving\u00a0that\u00a0place! The\u00a0kids\u00a0are\u00a0lovely\u00a0and\u00a0we were all\u00a0touched\u00a0even\u00a0some\u00a0of the\u00a0group\u00a0decided\u00a0to sponsor\u00a0some\u00a0of the\u00a0kids.<\/p>\n<p>Day 14<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0walk on the\u00a0wild\u00a0side\u00a0is\u00a0exactly\u00a0what\u00a0this\u00a0two\u00a0Irish\u00a0girls\u00a0decided\u00a0to\u00a0do in Hells Gate National Park, Elsa\u00a0gate\u00a0is\u00a0right behind\u00a0\u00a0them\u00a0and\u00a0from\u00a0here\u00a0they\u00a0walked\u00a0about\u00a08km\u00a0up\u00a0to the\u00a0rangers\u00a0post\u00a0and\u00a0then\u00a0back\u00a0so 16km in\u00a0total. They\u00a0also\u00a0managed\u00a0to explore\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0gorge\u00a0where\u00a0they saw\u00a0some\u00a0hot springs. They said\u00a0they had\u00a0a great\u00a0day\u00a0and\u00a0very\u00a0worth\u00a0it.
