An extraordinarily diverse and beautiful sweeping landscape, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, including the Crater itself, are home to an incredible number of animals. In fact, you have the opportunity to see just about every animal endemic to East Africa across these parks, making it THE place to come on safari!
At this time of year the parks are a stunning emerald green, drinking up the much needed rains and providing lush grasses for the animals in the area. As time progresses over the next few months, the parks will start to dry out and vegetation dies back, meaning animals congregate at water holes and visibility is improved further.
The types of animals you can expect to see on a safari in this region are:
Elephant – These majestic giants patrol the region throughout the year. In the Ngorongoro Crater spot the old male elephants with some of the longest tusks in Africa, due to their ability to grow old and unpoached in this protected area.
Lion – The King of the Jungle, and also the savannah, lions are always on everyone’s bucket list on an African safari. Listen out for the unmistakable roars reverberating across the plains in the early hours.
Leopard – This big cat is a treat to see on safari as he is very elusive…but keep your eyes peeled in the tree branches and look for a tail hanging down!
Rhino – The critically endangered black rhino is present in the region and can be differentiated from its cousin by its pointed lip. The white rhino has a wider mouth and its name in fact comes from a misunderstanding of the Dutch word for “wide” rather than referring to its colour.
Giraffe – this gentle creature can be seen throughout the region, except for inside the Crater itself due to the steep descent. It is Tanzania’s national animal and it is the Masai giraffe species which will be seen in this country.
Flamingo – These elegant birds can be seen in Lake Magadi in the Ngorongoro Crater. The greater and lesser flamingo species are present, with the greater the larger and most widespread of all flamingo species.
