Wildlife Encounter

9 Days from Kigale, Rwanda to Arusha, Tanzania

A guide for all departures from 25 October 2009 onwards

RWANDA

Days 1 – 4

Our safari commences in Kigale, the capital of Rwanda. Rwanda is a land of mist shrouded forest clad mountains, and is the home of the last remaining mountain gorillas. Travelling to the north west of the country to the Parc Nacional des Volcans which protects the steep lush slopes of the great volcanic range, The Virungas, we arrive into the bustling market town of
Ruhengeri at the base of the Virungas. It is here we head out on our gorilla trek with local gorilla guides. Nothing will prepare you for the excitement and delight of sitting with a family of gorillas in their forest home.

Treks are also available to view the habituated golden monkeys, a sub species of the blue monkey amidst dense stands of bamboo in the park. A visit Dian Fossey’s grave at Karisoke can also be arranged.

We stop to spend time in the Genocide Museum during our stay and you can also visit a children’s orphanage. The children of Africa will melt your heart. The memories of the genocide are haunting and at the same time this small landlocked country is forging a future, finding a way forward from the dark days of 1994.  A night out during our time in Rwanda will also ensure we experience the excitement of African dancing and music.

TANZANIA

Days 4 – 9

Travelling south into Tanzania below Lake Victoria we are now on true African roads visiting local towns and villages on route, giving us a sense of life in Africa off the main tourist drag. Arriving into Arusha we can enjoy some shopping for Maasai curios, and then relax and enjoy a hot shower and barbe
cue in the grounds of the Meserani Snake Park.

Game drives in the Serengeti, arguably the best known wildlife sanctuary in the world, are our next major highlight. About 35 species of plains animal can be seen here including the “big five” - elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. From December to June the big migratory herds are usually found in the area. The Ngorongoro Crater is part of the same ecosystem. The famous plains also extend to the north into unprotected Loliondo division.

Our game drives are organised in smaller 4x4s allowing us to get off the main roads onto smaller tracks, and the local Tanzanian safari guides do all in their power to ensure we get the very best viewing during our three day safari across the two parks, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

This is also our chance to camp out in the wilds in the African bush. Zip up your tent door, snuggle down in your bag and listen to the sounds of the wilds of Africa.

Maasai pastoralists can also be seen throughout the area. Many still practice their traditional semi nomadic ways, their herds being moved throughout the year to maximise the best use of the land and maintain wildlife corridors.  We visit a traditional village during our time here in the region and enjoy traditional dancing.

Our time in Tanzania’s world famous game parks is a fitting end to our African safari allowing us to encounter some of Africa’s most famous wildlife and game.
